Facebook was always famous for the sign that hung in its offices, written in big red type on a white background, that said “Move Fast and Break Things.” Every time I think about the company, I realize it has done just that—to itself.
“The damage done to organizations in crises isn’t the crisis itself—it’s how you handle the crisis,” Scott Galloway, author of the new book The Four: The Hidden D.N.A. of Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Google, told me this week on the latest episode of the Inside the Hive podcast.
Facebook’s fundamental problem is not foreign interference, spam bots, trolls, or fame mongers. It’s the company’s core business model, and abandoning it is not an option.
“We are certainly hearing more from one another than ever before. Ideas that were once dismissed as fringe, from white supremacy to socialism, are getting expressed and openly shared. By Zuckerberg’s math, that should be producing a more cohesive society and a better-functioning democracy. But that isn’t happening, because of what Zuckerberg’s equation leaves out.”
